Water Main Breaks at Glade Stream, Sewer Line to be Replaced at Lake Thoreau: RA Reports

The new sewer line should be in place by mid-September, while the broken water main should be fixed in the coming days.

Reston Association was alerted of muddy water in Glade Stream behind Charlestown Lane on Wednesday morning, and with the help of Fairfax Water was able to confirm a water main break was the source of the problem.

Patch will continue to update this story as it develops.

The water main break is not the only news concerning RA and technical repairs this week.

RA also reported Tuesday evening that Fairfax County contractors will begin work to replace a sewer pipe in the West Cove area of Lake Thoreau within the next two weeks, starting on either Aug. 17 or 24. The project will take 10-12 days and will begin on Aug. 17 or 24, a county engineering technician told RA.

RA also confirmed the county will fund the repairs.

In June, four of the seven straps that held the pipe in place were found to be broken during an inspection, causing the pipe to buckle about 18 inches near one of the manhole covers on the south side of the cove. The county found no evidence of a break or leakage into the lake, RA confirmed.

An additional investigation completed in July determined there were actually two sags in the pipe, which inspired the county to replace the entire sewer line and add a protective lining to the new line.

RA said the entire project should be completed by mid-September.
