RESTON, VA — While New Year’s Day is often a day to recover from the previous night's festivities, if you do plan to head out, it’s good to know how the holiday may affect the availability of services in Reston.

New Year’s Day is one of several holidays that usually affect the hours of government offices, libraries, public transportation, garbage pickup and other services in Reston.

To help you plan, here’s a roundup of what’s open and what’s closed on New Year’s Day in our area:

Fairfax County government offices: County government offices will be closed on Friday, Dec. 31.

Fairfax County Public Schools: Students have winter break from Dec. 20 to 31.

Courts: The Fairfax County General District Court, Circuit Court, and Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court will be closed on Dec. 30 and 31.

Animal shelter: The Fairfax County Animal Shelter offers services by appointment only. Animal-related emergencies should be directed to Animal Protection Police at 703-691-2131.

Community Center: Reston Community Center-Hunter Wood is open Friday, Dec. 31, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.; and Saturday, Jan. 1, from 12-5 p.m. RCC-Hunter Woods is closed Friday, Dec. 31 and Saturday, Jan. 1.

Community centers: Fairfax County Neighborhood and Community Services community centers will be closed from noon on Dec. 31 through Jan. 2. Fastran will not operate Dec. 31 or Jan. 1.

Department of Motor Vehicles: All DMV customer service centers will be closed Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.

Fairfax Connector: On Dec. 31 and Jan. 1, Fairfax Connector will run Saturday service. Routes on a Saturday schedule will include 101, 109, 151, 152, 161, 162, 171, 308, 310, 321, 322, 371, 401, 402, 423, 424, 463, 467, 505, 551, 558, 559, 574, 605, 630, 640, 650, 703, 721, 803, 937, 950, 981, 983, RIBS 1, RIBS 2, RIBS 3, RIBS 4 and RIBS 5. Libraries: Library locations will be closed on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.

Metro: On Dec. 31, Metrobus operates on a Saturday schedule, while Metrorail operates on a weekday schedule. Both services operate on a Sunday schedule on Jan. 1. Visit www.wmata.com/schedules/timetables for more information.

Park Authority: Sully Historic Site will be open 11 a.m.-4 p.m., on Friday, Dec. 31. Colvin Run Mill, E.C. Lawrence Nature Center, Hidden Oaks Nature Center, Hidden Pond Nature Center, Huntley Meadows Nature Center, Riverbend Park Visitor Center, Frying Pan Farm Park and Green Spring Gardens will be closed on Dec. 31. All park authority properties will be closed on Saturday, Jan. 1.

Post offices: Some locations may have limited hours on Dec. 31. Check with your local post office. All post offices are closed on Jan. 1.

Recreation centers: Rec centers will be closed on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.

Trash and recycling:: No change in trash collection on Friday, Dec. 31 for Fairfax County customers. For communities with private trash collection, check with your contracted trash collection company. The I-66 Transfer Station (4618 West Ox Road) and the I-95 Landfill Complex (9850 Furnace Road) will be open until 2 p.m. on Dec. 31 and closed on Jan. 1.

Christmas Tree Collection: Fairfax County Christmas trees will be collected from Jan. 3-14 for recycling. After Jan. 14, schedule a special brush pickup.
