RESTON, VA — On Monday, residents and businesses in Reston will take a moment to honor the life and legacy of civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr.

Reston' 37th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration with some COVID-19 restrictions in place due to the rise in Omicron variant cases in Virginia.

Baratunde Thurston will be hold space for complex conversations mixing humor, wisdom and compassion on Sunday at CenterStage. On Monday, there will be a luncheon community luncheon at RCC Hunters Woods featuring author Heather McGhee as the keynote speaker. A program for children is also planned for Monday at RCC.

As a federal holiday, MLK Day could also affect the hours of government offices, libraries, public transportation, garbage pickup and other services in Reston.

Before you head out, here’s a roundup of what’s open and what’s closed on Martin Luther King Jr. Day in our city:

Fairfax County government offices: County government offices are closed on Jan. 17.

Courts: The Fairfax County General District Court, Circuit Court, and Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court will be closed on Jan. 17.

Community centers: Fairfax County community centers will be closed Jan. 15 to 17. Fastran will not operate on Jan. 17.

Fairfax Connector: On Jan. 17, Fairfax Connector will run holiday weekday service. For more information, visit www.fairfaxcounty.gov/connector.

Libraries: Library locations are now closed on Sundays and Mondays. See hours for other days at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/library/branches.

Metro: Metrorail and Metrobus typically run on a Saturday schedule on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Due to the continued impacts of the derailment and 7000-series investigation, Metrorail service continues to be reduced. Visit www.wmata.com/schedules/timetables for more information.

Park authority: Check back for holiday hours for Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2022 from the park authority.

Post offices: Closed on Jan. 17.

Recreation centers: Check back for holiday hours for Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2022 from the park authority.

Trash and recycling: Refuse and recycling in the city will not be collected on Jan. 17. Monday and Tuesday refuse and recycling routes will be collected on Tuesday.

Trash and recycling centers: The I-66 Transfer Station (4618 West Ox Road) and the I-95 Landfill Complex (9850 Furnace Road) are open regular hours on Jan. 17.

Virginia DMV: All DMV customer service centers will be closed Jan. 17.
