What's Open, Closed On MLK Jr. Day 2023 In Reston
See how the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday will affect parks and recreation, libraries, and more in Reston and Fairfax County.

RESTON, VA — Residents and businesses in Reston will honor the life and legacy of civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, Jan. 16.
Reston Community Center will celebrate its 38th annual Reston Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration with a variety of events the entire weekend.
The highlight event will be a keynote address delivered by The New York Times bestselling author Heather McGhee at 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 16 at RCC Hunters Woods. McGhee's keynote address is sold out, but attendees are invited to visit the CentreStage Box Office window at RCC Hunters Woods to be put on the waiting list for when tickets are released at 10 a.m. on Monday. Tickets are $5 for Reston residents and employees and $20 for all others.

Here are the other events planned for the 38th annual Reston Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration:
- Community Service Projects - Saturday, Jan. 14, 9 a.m., join others in honoring King's legacy by performing a community service project. RCC is partnering with the Cathy Hudgins Community Center at Southgate, the Reston Association, Cornerstones and The Closet in offering volunteer opportunities. - Reston Community Orchestra - Saturday, Jan. 14, 4 p.m., at the RCC Hunters Woods Community Room. This free ticketed performance will feature Reston vocalist Beverly Cosham, students from Al Faith Academy and other special guests. Tickets available through the RCC Box Office.
- Mark G. Meadows: Music and The Movement - Sunday, Jan. 15, at 2 p.m., in RCC Hunters Woods- the CenterStage. $15 for Reston residents and $20 for non-residents. Tickets sold through the RCC Box Office.
- Keynote Address by Heather McGhee followed by Community Lunch - Monday, Jan. 16, at 11 a.m., in RCC Hunters Woods -the CenterStage and Community Room. $5 Reston residents/$20 for non-residents.
- Especially for Youth - Monday, Jan. 16, at 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at RCC Hunters Woods. Free activities for children 6-12. Registration Required. Reg. #704750
- American Red Cross Blood Drive - 1:30-5:30 p.m., at RCC Hunters Woods. Make your appointment here.
As a federal holiday, MLK Day could also affect the hours of government offices, libraries, public transportation and other services in Reston and across Fairfax County.

Below are the openings and closures to know for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday around Reston:
Fairfax County government offices: Closed Monday, Jan. 16.
Fairfax County Public Schools: Closed Monday, Jan. 16.
Courts: Fairfax County Circuit Court and General District Court will be closed Monday, Jan. 16.
Post offices: Closed on Monday, Jan. 16.
Department of Motor Vehicles: All DMV customer service centers will be closed Monday, Jan. 16.
Libraries: All Fairfax County Public Library branches will be closed Monday, Jan. 16.
Animal Shelter: The Fairfax County Animal Shelter will be closed Monday, Jan. 16.
Metrorail: On Monday, Jan. 16, Metrorail will run regular scheduled weekday service.
Metrobus: On Monday, Jan. 16, Metrobus will operate on a Saturday supplemental schedule.
Fairfax Connector: On Monday, Jan. 16, Fairfax Connector will run holiday weekday service. All routes operate regular weekday service except Routes 231, 232, 335, 393, 394, 395, 396, 432, 461, 494, 495, 599, 624, 634, 697, 698, 699, 715, 722, 724 834 and 835, which will not operate. Recreation centers: Fairfax County recreation centers are open regular hours on Monday, Jan. 16.
Parks: Most Fairfax County parks, including the Riverbend Park, will be open Monday, Jan. 16. Colvin Run Mill will be closed on Monday, Jan. 16.
Trash and recycling: There will be no change in the trash and recycling collection schedules on Monday, Jan. 16 for county trash customers. Residents with private collection should contact their haulers.
Trash and recycling centers: The Recycling and Disposal Centers at the I-66 Transfer Station and the I-95 Landfill Complex will both be open on Monday, Jan. 16.
