Cyclist sought after driver assaulted, strangled near VCU campus in Virginia (myfox8.com) — Police in Richmond are searching for a cyclist after a driver was assaulted and strangled during a confrontation with a large group of riders blocking traffic near VCU's campus Thursday night. One cyclist has already been arrested for simple assault, and VCU Police are asking anyone who recognizes the person of interest or has cell phone video to contact investigators.
2. What neighbor heard before double shooting outside Richmond house party: 'Dogs started barking' (wtvr.com) — A late-night house party on Richmond's Southside ended in a double shooting, leaving a man critically injured and a woman hurt, according to Richmond Police. A nearby neighbor described hearing music, screams, and two gunshots before police arrived. Investigators are still seeking information and urge anyone with tips to contact Crime Stoppers anonymously.
3. Parents await mold test results as Obama Elementary start date delayed (nbc12.com) — Families at Richmond's Barack Obama Elementary are facing a delayed school start as mold and HVAC problems raise serious air-quality concerns inside the building. Parents describe health worries, poor communication from Richmond Public Schools, and demand a clear, immediate plan to fix the issues and keep students, staff, and their tight-knit neighborhood community safe.
4. Richmond Earn a Point at Home, Draw 1-1 Against Portland Hearts of Pine (richmondkickers.com) — Richmond soccer fans saw the Kickers battle back for a 1-1 draw against Portland Hearts of Pine at City Stadium, earning a point at home. After trailing at halftime, Richmond equalized in the 74th minute and held on thanks to key saves from goalkeeper Yann Fillion. The club now looks ahead to hosting Forward Madison in the Henny Derby on Aug. 29.
5. Virginia lawmakers begin data center tax exemption review: 'I don't intend to back down' (wtvr.com) — Lawmakers meeting in Richmond are reexamining Virginia's generous sales tax exemption for data centers, which has cost the state nearly $2 billion but also drives major investment and local tax revenue. The joint subcommittee, pressed by Sen. Louise Lucas to hold more hearings, must recommend new ways for the industry to contribute state revenue by December 2026.
