While RRHA insists its response was timely and thorough, Councilmember Kenya Gibson is pressing for more transparency and wants to know whether similar complaints are still occurring in city public housing.
2. Cornstalks sprout along Capital Trail canal after CSX train derailment (wtvr.com) — Cornstalks now lining the canal along Richmond's Capital Trail are a lingering sign of July's CSX grain train derailment, which caused a fish kill and drew more geese to the area. Officials say the corn itself isn't invasive, but unrecovered grain continues affecting water quality, and the city has yet to say whether it will remove the plants.
3. Record diesel prices strain Chesterfield food bank (nbc12.com) — Record-high diesel prices in Virginia are straining the Chesterfield Food Bank Outreach Center and forcing it to shift money away from food purchases, while Richmond Public Schools say their fuel contract helps limit cost spikes. Local school divisions across the region are monitoring budgets closely as transportation and cold storage become more expensive, potentially affecting services residents rely on.
4. Virginia Sports Betting Industry Pushes for Stricter Responsible Gambling (bonus.com) — Richmond recently hosted the first in a series of statewide roundtables where major sports betting companies, lawmakers, and public health experts pushed for tougher responsible gambling rules. The discussion focused on protecting young adults, improving treatment resources, and preparing for possible online casino expansion that could bring more tax revenue but also higher risks of problem gambling across Virginia.
5. Virginia to honor 25th anniversary of 9/11 tragedy by lowering flags to half-staff (wric.com) — Virginia will mark the 25th anniversary of 9/11 by lowering U.S. and state flags at government buildings, including those in Richmond, from sunrise to sunset on Friday. Governor Spanberger's order honors victims, first responders, and the acts of courage and unity that followed, and Central Virginia outlets are sharing local remembrance stories and a special program.
