Today's riddle: What do you call a paper airplane that can't fly? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Richmond is resurfacing Mayo Bridge. Here's how that will impact traffic. (wtvr.com) — Mayo Bridge in Richmond will undergo resurfacing from Oct. 13–23, bringing daily lane closures from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and a permanent shift from four lanes to two with full shoulders. Drivers should expect traffic control, posted detours, and a smoother, safer route that also improves walking and rolling access to the riverfront and Mayo Island Park.
2. RPS auditor details work order changes, says forensic audit not worth cost (nbc12.com) — Richmond Public Schools' internal auditor says a costly forensic audit of the division's finances isn't necessary, citing strong existing oversight and recent improvements. After gaps were found in how facilities work orders were handled, RPS implemented a new system in June 2026, aiming to better track repairs and prevent issues like those that recently disrupted two elementary schools.
3. Richmond marathoners will cross a new finish line this year (wric.com) — Richmond runners will see a big change this year as the Allianz Richmond Marathon, CarMax Half Marathon, and Capital One 8K all finish at a new location near Byrd and 5th streets. Organizers say the updated finish chute, new meeting area on Tredegar, and adjusted starting lines are designed to ease congestion and make race-day celebrations along the riverfront even more enjoyable.
4. Compassionate Care Awards 2026 (salsalabs.org) — Richmond neighbors are invited to the Compassionate Care Awards dinner at The Jefferson Hotel on October 15, celebrating CrossOver Healthcare Ministry's volunteers and staff who serve thousands of local patients. Honorees include a longtime Richmond VA Medical Center pharmacy leader and physicians who've dedicated decades to caring for underserved communities.
5. Richmond mail carrier delivers life-saving care (nbc12.com) — A Richmond postal carrier, Sirita Johnson, is being praised after quickly recognizing stroke symptoms in a jewelry store employee on her route and calling 911. Coworkers believe her fast action likely saved the woman's life, earning Sirita a nomination for a local Acts of Kindness award and highlighting everyday heroism happening quietly around Richmond businesses.
