SPRINGFIELD, VA — What happens when someone outlives their financial resources while living in a retirement community?
At Greenspring, the answer can include support from the community's Benevolent Care Fund, which is just one way the community supports eligible residents who, despite careful financial planning, outlive their resources.
Greenspring has raised approximately $500,000 for the fund so far this year through a series of fundraising efforts, including its recent sold-out "Stars and Stripes: Celebrating America 250" gala.
More than 200 residents and guests attended the annual event, Greenspring's largest charity fundraiser of the year.
"The Gala is the biggest charity event each year at Greenspring," said Kimberly Nelson, Greenspring's Director of Philanthropy. "It's a wonderful evening full of surprises with President George Washington, the Statue of Liberty and Uncle Sam on stilts."
The gala was supported by 125 resident sponsors, along with resident organizations and community partners.
Funds raised throughout the year help provide financial assistance to residents who have outlived their resources, allowing them to continue calling Greenspring home.
"This annual event celebrates the generosity of our residents and their families, staff, community partners, and our Board of Directors," said Karyn Flannagan, Greenspring's Executive Director. "In so many ways, the Benevolent Care Fund epitomizes the word 'community' at Greenspring."
Greenspring's fundraising efforts also include Summerfest, bench dedications, and car donations.
The Benevolent Care Fund is supported through donations and community fundraising and is intended to provide assistance for qualifying residents who experience unforeseen financial hardship later in life.
