SPRINGFIELD, VA – The Washington Post has formally announced its intention to lay off more than 100 workers at its Springfield printing facility by the end of the year.
According to a notice sent to the Virginia Department of Workforce Development and Advancement, the Post's 118 employees at the plant will lose their jobs as of Dec. 31.
The layoffs were confirmed in January by the Washington Business Journal. The Post says it plans to move printing operations to a smaller facility in Loudoun County.
In 2011, ABC 7 reported on production at the Springfield plant, noting that at the time that the 600,000-square-foot facility churned out more than 500,000 newspapers a night on weekdays and more than 765,000 on Sunday.
Last year, according to the Washington Business Journal, the Washington Post's paid average daily circulation was 97,000 and 160,000 on Sundays.
