VIENNA, VA – Fairfax County Public Schools has announced an adjustment in its observance of the Eid al-Fitr holiday in March.
FCPS noted the calendar change in its weekly update, saying that the school system will now mark the beginning of Eid al-Fitr with an evening-only observance day on Monday, March 8. There will be school on this day, but major school-sponsored events and activities, such as sports tryouts, will not take place.
Tuesday, March 9, will be a holiday for students and staff.
Wednesday, March 10, will be an observance day, meaning classes will be held but activities that cannot be made up, like major tests or field trips, will not be scheduled on that day.
Originally, March 9 was scheduled for an evening-only observance and March 10 was a school holiday.
The school system has posted a new calendar reflecting the change.
FCPS also warns that holidays and observances on the calendar may shift due to lunar cycles. Some religious and traditional calendars are governed by actual sightings of the moon at different phases.
