1. Local blood banks respond to national shortage (wvtf.org) — Winchester's Red Cross blood donation center is helping offset a national blood shortage, and local leaders say there are still open appointments that need filling. Staff and volunteers describe how donations from Winchester support disaster-hit regions nationwide and stress that, with schools about to resume drives, residents who can donate now are urgently needed.
2. SU Pilots New Lifelong Learning Program for Older Adults (thewinchestergazette.com) — Older adults in Winchester can soon sit in on select Shenandoah University classes through the new SAGE (Shenandoah Adult Growth and Enrichment) program, without homework, tests, or grades. Designed for residents 60 and older, the pilot connects SAGE Scholars with undergraduates in existing courses to encourage lifelong learning and reduce ageism. 3. Laurel Ridge Community College Welcomes More Than 3,100 Students for Fall Semester (royalexaminer.com) — Laurel Ridge Community College has kicked off fall classes with more than 3,100 students, including 569 from Winchester, and officials say there's still time to enroll. Popular programs range from nursing to engineering, and multiple shorter sessions later this fall give local residents flexible options to start or add courses.
4. Shepherd men's basketball adds three (therealwv.com) — A John Handley High standout from Winchester, Kyren Oglesby, is headed to play men's basketball at Shepherd University after helping deliver Handley's first-ever state championship. He joins two West Virginia recruits on a Rams squad returning most of its scoring and aiming to compete in the tough PSAC this season.
5. Cattle farmers critical of U.S. plan to import beef (nvdaily.com) — Virginia cattle farmers, including those in the 6th District that runs to Winchester, are pushing back against President Trump's plan to temporarily allow more low-tariff imported beef. Producers and farm groups warn the move could undercut already stressed local operations facing drought, high input costs, and limited processing capacity, even as supporters frame it as a way to ease grocery prices.
