1. Community Watch: WPD Seeks Suspects in Target Shoplifting (thewinchestergazette.com) — Winchester Police are asking for the public's help identifying two people linked to a September 17 shoplifting case at Target in Winchester. Detailed descriptions and photos have been released, and anyone with information is urged to call WPD or submit an anonymous tip so investigators can follow up.
2. First Medical Cannabis Dispensary Opens in Winchester Area (thewinchestergazette.com) — A new medical cannabis dispensary has opened just outside Winchester on Shady Elm Road, giving local patients a much closer option for regulated products. Ayr Winchester offers in-store pickup, extended daily hours, and serves as both a dispensary and cultivation site, ending years of travel to distant cities for many area patients.
3. Frederick Co. Eyes New Rules for Electrical Infrastructure (thewinchestergazette.com) — Frederick County is considering new rules that would push high‑voltage power lines and substations away from homes, schools, and churches, with a preference for existing utility corridors and possible undergrounding. Residents in Winchester and nearby areas can weigh in at three public events at the County Administration Building on Kent Street, starting with an information open house Sept. 30, followed by October public hearings.
4. Virginia Works Plans October Job and Resource Fairs in Front Royal, Winchester (royalexaminer.com) — Winchester job seekers can meet employers at a Virginia Works Job and Resource Fair on Thursday, Oct. 15, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Handley Library on West Piccadilly Street. Alongside a similar Front Royal event, the fairs connect residents with open positions, apprenticeships, and career resources while helping local businesses find qualified workers.
5. A Prince George's County cold case arrest has Winchester ties (theriver953.com) — A 33‑year‑old Maryland cold case has resurfaced painful ties to Winchester, where one of the suspects, James Kowalski, lived during the long investigation and was implicated in possible abuse of local boys. Former Winchester detective and now Sheriff Lenny Millholland says he's saddened by the victim's fate but relieved the child's family finally has answers, as police urge any additional Virginia or Maryland victims to come forward.
