Prince William County Ranked Top In The Nation For Digital Innovation

Prince William County was ranked number one for its size in an annual assessment of how local governments use technology.

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, VA – Prince William County was ranked top in the nation for its size in the 2026 Digital Counties Survey run by Government Technology Magazine’s Center for Digital Government.

The awards recognize counties that demonstrate excellence in technology leadership, digital transformation and innovation to improve services, the county said in a release. The Center for Digital Government said the first-place winners have “embraced artificial intelligence and tackled community needs in public safety, constituent service and a range of other areas,” and “delivered practical solutions for pressing problems.”

Fifty-four counties were awarded this year.

Prince William County was recognized for its online 311 portal, a way for residents to submit service requests, connect with the correct department and track the progress of their requests through the county government using AI chat assistants. The portal went live in May 2025, and the Center for Digital Government says the county uses data the system collects to improve its services.

The 311 dashboard currently says it gets an average of 720 requests per month.

The county was also commended for its new 911 AI quality-assurance platform and a new digital towing program that allows vehicle owners to find their vehicles online, among other upgrades.

Prince William County was ranked among the top three counties for five consecutive years in the 250,000 to 499,999 population category before growing in population and taking the top spot.

The county noted in a press release that its technology initiatives are guided by its 2025-2028 Strategic Plan.

County residents' enthusiasm for technological development apparently ends when it comes to the proliferation of data centers. The county recently voted against a new data center proposal and overturned the approval of another.
