WOODBRIDGE, VA – A Woodbridge man has been arrested and charged in the shooting death of a 16-year-old earlier in July, Prince William County police announced.

Atwater is accused of murdering a 16-year-old boy from Triangle. Police say they found the boy suffering from a gunshot wound in a parking lot on the 16700 block of Blackjack Oak Lane in Woodbridge on July 5. The boy died in the hospital.

Police say a vehicle spotted leaving the crime scene was deemed of interest, but when officers attempted to stop a vehicle matching that description later that night, the driver refused to stop and eventually left the vehicle and fled on foot. Prince William County police will not say whether Atwater was the driver of that vehicle.

A date for Atwater's first court hearing has not yet been set.
