WOODBRIDGE, VA – A basketball coach at a Prince William County high school has been criminally charged after being accused of sexually assaulting one of his teenage players, police say.
According to the Prince William County Police Department, Demetrius Montrell Felder, 47, of Woodbridge, is accused of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old student at Gar-Field High School in Woodbridge on multiple occasions.
Felder is the head coach of the Gar-Field High School basketball team and an autism teacher assistant at Beville Middle School.
Police say Felder picked up the girl, who he coaches, from her home in June 2026, drove her to an undisclosed location in Prince William County and sexually assaulted her before driving her back to her residence. The girl said Felder also touched her inappropriately on a later date while giving her a ride home.
Police say none of the alleged assaults happened on school grounds.
A Prince William County police spokesperson said the department began its investigation on Oct. 20, when the student reported the alleged incidents to a staff member.
Felder was arrested on Wednesday and charged with five counts of indecent liberties by a custodian, a class 6 felony. He is being held without bond and has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Jan. 19.
In a letter to Gar-Field High School parents shared with Patch, Principal Matthew Mathison said Felder had been placed on administrative leave for the investigation.
"I am deeply troubled to learn of this allegation," Mathison wrote. "Our staff work hard every day to support our students and families, and I remain incredibly proud of the caring and dedicated community we have at Gar-Field. When our administrative team first learned about this allegation, we took immediate action to follow established protocols and procedures. Please know that we take matters involving students and staff safety seriously and remain committed to maintaining a safe and supportive environment for our Gar-Field community. "
Beville Middle School Principal Chevese Thomas said in a letter to her school's parents that she was "deeply concerned" about the allegation as well. "This is not reflective of our outstanding school and our hard-working staff who are committed to our students and community," she wrote.
