That habit can be summed up thusly: we believe what we do because we are afraid to accept that our beliefs might not be true. We might call this the religion of you. The religion of you has doctrines and these doctrines are rarely exposed to the light of discernment. Discernment can be described as a focus on being open. Open to further awareness which, in an enlightened world, would be the normal and healthy attitude to have. Focusing your intellect on being open allows you to listen with an open heart. Fear can be present but it can never affect this space of openness.
Some people describe this openness as a field (as in energy field). Rumi, the Sufi mystic, once said: "Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field. I will meet you there. When the soul lies down in that grass, the world is too full to talk about language, ideas, even the phrase each other doesn't make any sense." In the field of openness we listen, we observe and more importantly, we communicate in truth. Gone are the divisions, labels and projections of our own fears. An amazing thing happens in this open field, we have a feeling of completeness, of being home. All religions have a term for it because the mystics of each religion described the exact same state of awareness in almost exactly the same way.
This is very good news for humanity and the current state of polarization/fear that currently infects it. I didn’t say however, that it was easy to be/stay in this state. It does require that you have a desire to see past your projections. Let’s face it, you’re a hard habit to break (my apologies to the musical group Chicago). The nice thing about noticing you’re a habit is that it IS noticed. This very noticing /observing is what you are or as someone once said, you are God Godding.
I love experiments. In fact, this blog is an experiment, so let’s try an experiment. The next time you’re in a discussion with somebody and it’s not going so well, step back and pretend that you are an impartial observer of the discussion. An impartial observer doesn’t really have an opinion they just observe. At first it may seem odd because your ego wants to drag and frag you/other since it loves the game. Eventually “peace within” starts to become more attractive. There are qualities that only peace can fulfill and some part of the ego does desire peace or you wouldn’t have an ego to point this out. Yes, it’s all wonderfully circular.
Please report your experimental observations, field reports are always welcomed.
