What supplements do I really need?

This week we highlight the importance of 4 key supplements that I recommend to all individuals - protein powder, essential fatty acids, multi-vitamins and glutamine.  These 4 products provide the baseline for whatever your health goals are: losing weight, gaining lean muscle, having more energy, managing chronic illness, etc.

Protein powder - Protein is essential for feeling full, especially when trying to lose weight.  Women in general need 75 grams per day and men 100 grams per day.  Aim to split that over 3 meals and 2 snacks.  The problem - the majority of Americans, especially those who live in Northern Virginia, are SUPER busy!  Protein powder is portable and mixes well!  It can easily be substituted out for any other protein (animal or vegetarian) throughout the day.  It is also key to take 25-30 grams after a workout (1 scoop protein powder, chicken breast, 4oz. red meat, 5oz. fish will all work).

EFAs (Essential Fatty Acids) -  These amazing little fats help regulate hormones AND hormones help to regulate almost every other bodily function - especially losing or gaining weight!  EFAs are also the only scientifically documented supplements to show improvement in individuals with high blood pressure and high cholesterol.  But not all EFAs are created equal!  Flax for example is high in Omega 3-6-9 but it lacks EPA and DHA found in high grade fish oil!

Multi-Vitamins - There is an RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) for these supplements because they are vital to feeling well!  Lets face it, how many of us really eat 6-9 servings of vegetables a day?  I am a nutritionist and I don't get near that amount!  So, like car insurance, house insurance or life insurance, multi-vitamins ensure you are getting a solid baseline of protection.  Which ones to choose? - that will be another blog topic soon! 

Glutamine - This little supplement is the most necessary amino acid for anyone who wants to feel well!  Its the number 1 ingredient in all of our emergency fizzy wellness drinks!  It helps fight infection, maintains muscle, and breaks down inflammation.  Did you know inflammation alone is believed to be the cause for over 1000 medical illnesses?
