The Sky Is Falling! Hurricane Preparedness

Emergency preparedness for National Hurricane Preparedness Week. Family prepping with a twist.

"The sky is falling! The sky is falling!" (said in my Chicken Little voice)

Can you believe it’s May already? I should start planning for the holidays now. I’m not that bad when it comes to procrastination, just don’t ask my friends. This year I am going to be ready.

Did you know that May 27 (happy birthday Dad) is the beginning of National Hurricane Preparedness Week? I know that it is a few weeks away, but, to the professional procrastinator, we are going to get started now.

Now this  doesn’t mean Mother Nature is scheduling her arrival, it means it’s a great time to get some things in order. In Virginia, May 25-31, purchases of items designated by the Department of Taxation as hurricane preparedness equipment, including portable generators, will be exempt from the Virginia sales tax.

Portable generators $1,000 or less, and other eligible items  must be priced at $60 or less for each item. Can you say SHOPPING? Many feel that we are out of harm’s way when it comes to hurricanes, but actually we are very vulnerable to inland flooding.

I know we all remember the families who lost everything in the Sept. 8 flood that destroyed. That was a tropical storm. I know what you’re thinking…I just don’t have the time or the money to make a plan and get a kit. WRONG!

I am going to walk you through it in baby steps. Who am I you say? I’m a nurse by profession, specializing in infection prevention and life safety. I am the mom to five awesome kids and wife to an amazing husband, all of which can’t seem to find a matching sock to save their lives….Oh wait sorry, a little venting!

I live and work and volunteer in our community and I am dedicated to empowering families to become informed and stay prepared. So stick around for completely unique, inventive, original, artistic, ingenious, clever, imaginative, and resourceful (ran out of adjectives) ideas for families, kids and pets to be prepared. Relax I’m not an overly hyper extreme survivalist. (Maybe a little controlling, again, don’t ask my friends.)

Always Ready (usually),
Nisi
