Grayson Chapter of SAR salutes the Unknown Revolutionary War Soldier

Charles “Buddy” Wagner, a member of the Colonel William Grayson Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR), delivered a stirring rendition of the poem “A Toast to the Flag” at a President’s Day weekend ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier of the American Revolution in Alexandria, Virginia.

In 1826, workers digging a foundation behind the Old Presbyterian Meeting House found an unmarked grave, with an ammunition box serving as a coffin. The tattered uniform of the grave’s occupant identified him as a Revolutionary War soldier and the buttons on the uniform indicated he was from Kentucky. The soldier's remains were re-interred in the cemetery behind the meeting house. In 1929 a Memorial was created.

The Colonel William Grayson Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) is a civic organization serving Prince William County and western Fairfax County. The SAR serves and honors, veterans, first responders, Scouting America, Junior ROTC, and other patriotic, civic, and historical groups and organizations. Membership in the Sons of the American Revolution is open to the lineal descendant of a Revolutionary War soldier, sailor or Patriot. This includes persons who not only fought in the military or militia, but who also may have provided supplies, medical aid, signed oaths of Faith and Fidelity and similar acts.
