Lottery To Choose 100 For Housing Voucher Wait List In Prince William County

Prince William County will accept applications for a lottery to choose the wait list for subsidized housing vouchers.

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, VA — More residents with limited income will have the chance to get on the wait list for subsidized voucher housing in Prince William County.

The county government said it will open applications for its Housing Choice Voucher Program wait list for eligible households living or working in Prince William County or households with an adult under 62 with a disability. Households receiving the vouchers will pay 30 to 40 percent of their adjusted income toward rent to the landlord.

"The voucher program aids the most vulnerable of our residents while supporting the county's strategic goal of providing a safe and secure community for all," said OHCD Director Joan Duckett. “The Housing Choice Voucher Program assists very low-income families, the elderly, and the disabled to afford decent, safe and sanitary housing in the private market. We are hopeful that those in need will take advantage of this opportunity to get on the Mainstream Specialized Program’s waitlist.”

Application will open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, May 28. Once eligibility is determined, 100 applicants will be randomly chosen through a lottery for the wait list. Applicants picked for the wait list will be notified.

Prince William County uses HUD area median income limits by household size to determine eligibility. However, 75 percent of new admissions are typically at or below extremely low-income limits (30 percent of area median income), which is $32,500 for an individual and $46,400 for a family of four.

When a subsidized voucher housing unit becomes available, the household first on the wait list will be screened for eligibility, and adults will get a criminal record check. Approved applicants will be able to look for housing on the private market with the voucher. Residents must find a landlord willing to rent to voucher recipients.

The application will be available online during the May 28 application period. To apply, residents must provide full legal names, Social Security numbers, birthdates, mailing address and household income information for every person in the household.
