WOODBRIDGE, VA — Community meetings will be held in April to collect more community input on the proposed indoor sports and events center in Woodbridge.

The proposed facility on 21.85 acres at 13505 Telegraph Road in Woodbridge would fill a need for indoor sport and special event space, according to the county government. It could have eight basketball courts with a conversion option to 16 volleyball courts and 24 pickleball courts 200-meter indoor track and event space with a conversion option to basketball courts, volleyball courts and pickleball courts, audience seating up to 5,000, multi-purpose rooms and more space.

The proposal calls for the county government funding the complex and choosing a third-party operator or operating the complex itself. Use of the facility would be fee-based. The project cost is not finalized, but the county estimates it could be between $117.8 million and $135.8 million, which includes a $16 million land purchase.

In November 2023, the Prince William County Board of County Supervisors approved a purchase agreement for the land. The board must decide within 150 days — by May 18 — if it will advance the project. If the board does not move forward with the project, the county would receive its $550,000 refundable security deposit back. The deposit comes from $416,250 in available Lift Up Lodging funds from the American Rescue Plan Act and $133,750 in transient occupancy tax fund revenues.

The board also approved an interim agreement with MEB General Contractors for the project. The $310,000 cost of the agreement for site analysis, preliminary engineering, operating cost estimates and more work, is covered by remaining Lift Up Lodging funds from the American Rescue Plan Act.
