People decorated their houses not just for Christmas and Hanukkah but for the New Year too. But how did New Year’s Day start? This celebration started in 2,000 B.C. in the middle of March. At first it was about time for the Vernal Equinox. In pre-Christian Rome under the Julian Calendar, the day was dedicated to Janus, god of gateways and beginnings, of which is now called January. Many people enjoy this Holiday because it gives them a chance to ponder what they can do better. Every person thinks that New Year's Day is the time to think of new ways to improve themselves. In many countries, New Year's Eve is celebrated at evening social gatherings, where many people dance, eat, and do fireworks to celebrate the occasion. Some people say that they will be glad to have fun with friends and family. Some partake in sleepovers. And others choose to just relax and watch movies by themselves all night long. I, as an Ahmadi Muslim Girl, believe that New Year’s Day is a great way for people to spend time with friends and family. But I also think that we should start the New Year with prayers and ask God for forgiveness. Then, instead of playing games all night long, me and my family go to the mosque to offer Prayers early in the morning. We pray to ask for good health and blessings throughout the next year. I wish everyone a Happy New Year with the hope that you will have many blessings in the years to come.
