Authorities said a police officer shot a pair of dogs in Woodbridge on Monday evening after they bit him. One dog is expected to recover.

WOODBRIDGE, VA — A police officer shot two dogs in Woodbridge on Monday evening after they bit him, according to the Prince William County Police Department.
One dog, a 2-year-old male, was euthanized. The other dog, a 7-month-old female, is expected to recover, authorities said. The police officer suffered minor injuries and received treatment by rescue personnel at the scene, according to the police department.
Police officers responded to a home in the 13900 block of Telegraph Road around 10 p.m. on Monday for a welfare check. Two dogs charged at the officer as he spoke with a resident of the home, police said.

In the front yard, one of the dogs bit the officer in the hip while the other latched onto his vest, according to the police report. The officer fired his service weapon and hit both dogs.
The dogs retreated into the home until animal control took them into custody. Both dogs were taken to an area animal hospital, where the older dog was euthanized.
