Prince William Budget, Tax Rate Hearings Planned As Final Action Nears
The real estate tax rate and potential tax rate change affecting data center equipment will be part of the upcoming budget hearings.

WOODBRIDGE, VA — A key part in the Prince William County budget process is coming up with the budget, tax rates and fees public hearing on Tuesday.
A public hearing on the real estate tax rate is required under Virginia law when the rate would increase taxes by 1 percent or more. Prince William County's budget proposed a real estate tax rate of $0.966 per $100 of assessed value. Even with a flat rate, average tax bills would increase by 5 percent, or $270.
However, the Board of County Supervisors is considering $0.940 per $100 of assessed value, the average bill would increase by $132.

The Board of Supervisors will consider a rate up to $3.70 per $100 of assessed value for the personal property tax on business tangible computer and peripherals, which includes data center equipment. That would be an increase from the current $2.15 per $100 of assessed value. During the last budget cycle, the rate was raised from $1.80 per $100 of assessed value to $2.15 per $100 value. The personal property tax rate for vehicles is proposed to remain the same at $3.70 per $100 of assessed value.
Solid waste fees are proposed to remain the same. On the other hand, the stormwater management fee is proposed to increase from $47.50 to $52.26 per year for a single-family detached property. The rate for townhouses, apartments and condominiums would increase from $35.63 to $39.20 per year.
County Executive Christopher Shorter will also present a budget recap with funding adjustments under discussion.
The Board of County Supervisors will have a budget markup on April 16 and final budget adoption on April 23.
The public may provide comments on the budget at the April 9 public hearing virtually or in person at McCoart Building, 1 County Complex Court. Residents must sign up by 5 p.m. on the day before the public hearing.
