The American Cancer Society will host the twentieth annual Relay For Life of EPWC charity walk at Gar-Field High School located at 14000 Smoketown Road in Woodbridge, Virginia.

Relay For Life features teams from businesses, schools, religious groups, neighborhoods, and civic organizations who have been raising funds for the American Cancer Society, in the fight against all types of cancer. During this twelve hour event, members of each team will take turns walking around the school track. While not on the track, team members will enjoy a festival-style atmosphere with entertainment, games and activities for all ages. We will also have wonderful activities open to the entire community, including fundraisers, games & meaningful ceremonies.

CELEBRATE: One of the very special moments at Relay will be the first laps after our Survivor Ceremony, taken by cancer survivors and caregivers in our community. If you, or anyone you know, is a cancer survivor and would like to help us kick off this event by taking part in the triumphant “Victory Lap,” we invite you to do so! The Survivor Ceremonies, including the Survivor Dinner and Survivors’ Victory Lap, will begin at 4:00 PM. For more information on the Survivor Dinner please e-mail us at epwcsurvivor@gmail.com or at epwcrelay@gmail.com.

REMEMBER: Another highlight of the event, open to all who wish to attend, is a special candle-lighting (Luminaria) Ceremony at 9:00 PM on Saturday, May 16th. Votive candles, placed in weighted white bags and lit for a soft effect, are being sold now through 8:30 p.m. on May 16th. For a $10 donation for 1 bag or 3 bags for $25, you can dedicate a candle to someone who has battled cancer. Names of the honored individuals will be placed on the bags, and the luminarias will be placed around the track. The ceremony includes an inspirational message, music, a moment of silence and the lighting of the candles, which will remain lit throughout the night. It is a time for remembrance and reflection, for healing and for hope.

FIGHT BACK: We invite everyone in the various communities of Eastern Prince William County to help us fight back against this cancer by supporting this very special event. Please feel free to come over to watch, take part in the Survivors’ Victory Lap and/or Luminaria ceremony, or simply join in the festivities.
