Sons of the American Revolution Commemorate Richland Raid

On July 23, 1776, 30 brave militiamen from Prince William County drove off 108 British soldiers, marines and sailors at Richland, the home of Captain William Brent.

On July 23, 2026, the Colonel William Grayson Chapter, SAR commemorated this event as a 250 America event. It was the FIRST TIME this event was ever commemorated. Vice President Jeff Sterling was the Master of Ceremony for the event. Historian Chalrs Mills offered insight to the Rippon Lodge Historic Site where the event was held. Color Guard Commander Jon Huddleston, Quartermaster Jack Mills, Guardsman Bill Groth were joined by Fairfax Resolves Chapter, Virginia Society, Sons of the American Revolution Color Guard Commander James Cordes. George Washington Chapter, Virginia SAR President Scot Bryant was in attendance. President Andrew Mills said, "Let is never be forgotten that one man from Prince William County is worth three British soldiers."

The Colonel William Grayson Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) is a civic organization serving Prince William County and western Fairfax County. The SAR serves and honors, veterans, first responders, Scouting America, Junior ROTC, and other patriotic, civic, and historical groups and organizations. Membership in the Sons of the American Revolution is open to the lineal descendant of a Revolutionary War soldier, sailor or Patriot. This includes persons who not only fought in the military or militia, but who also may have provided supplies, medical aid, signed oaths of Faith and Fidelity and similar acts.
