Tractor-Trailer Driver Dies in I-95 Wreck with Dump Truck

Crash late Friday night near Woodbridge diverted traffic off of the interstate until Saturday morning, according to Virginia State Police.

A man died Friday night after the tractor-trailer he was driving struck a dump truck near the Triangle exit on Interstate 95, according to Virginia State Police.

At 10:52 p.m., officers received a call of a disabled dump truck in the middle lane heading northbound, according to police spokesperson Corinne Geller.

“A trooper was immediately dispatched to assist the truck; however, within two minutes of the first call being received, a northbound tractor-trailer struck the dump truck,” Geller said in a statement. “The impact of the crash caused both vehicles to overturn.”

The driver of the tractor-trailer died at the scene. His name has not been released, pending identification and contacting next of kin.

The driver of the dump truck was transported to Sentara Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The Virginia State Police Fairfax Division Crash Reconstruction Team and State Police Motor Carrier Safety Team responded to the scene to assist with the investigation.

Northbound I-95 traffic was detoured onto Route 1 north. All I-95 lanes were reopened by 4:45 a.m. Saturday.
