VA Officials Report Half The Coronavirus Cases From A Week Ago

Virginia health officials reported 663 new cases of the coronavirus Monday, half the number of new cases that were reported a week ago.

VIRGINIA — The Virginia Department of Health reported 663 new cases of the coronavirus Monday, half the number of new cases reported only a week ago. The daily increase in positive cases also was about 400 cases below the state's 7-day average.

A week ago, on Monday, Aug. 3, state health officials reported a daily increase of 1,324 positive coronavirus cases. After passing the 100,000 mark on Sunday, cumulative cases of the coronavirus now stand at 100,749 as of Monday.

One new death was reported Monday, lifting the total number of deaths since the start of the pandemic to 2,327. Cumulative hospitalizations stand at 8,391 after 22 new hospitalization were reported Monday.

The new coronavirus cases include 231 in the eastern region, 160 in the northern region, 110 in the central region, 91 in the southwest region and 71 in the northwest region.

The 7-day positive average of tests across the state dropped from 7.6 percent Sunday to 7.4 percent Monday. In Northern Virginia, Arlington County, Alexandria, Fairfax County, and Loudoun County are reporting a positivity rate of 5.6 percent or below. Prince William County is the exception in the region, with a 9.2 percent positivity rate.

As of Monday, 1,257,605 PCR tests have been completed in Virginia, an increase of 17,266 tests from Sunday.

Hospitalizations with confirmed or pending COVID-19 test results stand at 1,251 as of Monday, up from 1,200 on Sunday, but down slightly from 1,258 on Saturday. According to the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association, 12,961 COVID-19 patients have been discharged, up from 12,923 on Sunday.

On a regional basis, the hospitalizations include 494 in the eastern region as of Monday, 250 in the northern region, 210 in the central region, 199 in the southwest region and 98 in the northwest region.

The COVID-19 patients include 159 on ventilators and 279 in the intensive care units as of Monday. Ventilator use among all hospital patients is at 19 percent, while ICU occupancy stands at 80 percent. Virginia's average ICU occupancy in 2019 was 67 percent.

For the second day in a row, the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association dashboard indicated one hospital reporting difficulty obtaining personal protective gear in the next 72 hours, and one reporting difficulty obtaining other medical supplies. The last time a hospital had difficulty acquiring PPE was reported July 21 to 24.

No new COVID-19-related deaths were reported in Northern Virginia on Monday. Here are the latest case updates for our coverage areas between Sunday and Monday:

  • Alexandria: 2,976 cases, 278 hospitalizations, 60 deaths; increase of 12 cases.
  • Arlington County: 3,091 cases, 437 hospitalizations, 135 deaths; increase of 14 cases.
  • Fairfax County: 16,445 cases, 1,939 hospitalizations, 529 deaths; increase of 69 cases and two hospitalizations.
  • Fairfax City: 90 cases, 11 hospitalizations, seven deaths; increase of two cases.
  • Falls Church: 61 cases, nine hospitalizations, six deaths; increase of one case.
  • Loudoun County: 5,306 cases, 349 hospitalizations, 115 deaths; increase of 26 cases.
  • Manassas: 1,662 cases, 123 hospitalizations, 22 deaths; increase of nine cases.
  • Manassas Park: 515 cases, 50 hospitalizations, seven deaths; decrease of one case.
  • Prince William County: 9,516 cases, 802 hospitalizations, 176 hospitalizations; increase of 28 cases and one hospitalization.
  • Fredericksburg: 406 cases, 46 hospitalizations, four deaths; increase of three cases.
  • Spotsylvania County: 1,499 cases, 95 hospitalizations, 35 deaths; increase of 13 cases.
  • Stafford County: 1,385 cases, 120 hospitalizations, nine deaths; increase of 11 cases.
