WOODBRIDGE, VA — While New Year’s Day is often a day to recover from the previous night's festivities, if you do plan to head out, it’s good to know how the holiday may affect the availability of services in Woodbridge.

New Year’s Day is one of several holidays that usually affect the hours of government offices, libraries, public transportation, garbage pickup and other services in Woodbridge. Since New Year's Day falls on a Saturday this year, many offices are closing on Friday, Dec. 31 to provide an employees with an extra day off.

  • Prince William County government offices: Closed on Friday, Dec. 31 and Saturday, Jan. 1
  • Prince William County Schools: Closed for winter break. Schools re-open on Monday, Jan. 3.
  • Prince William County courts: The courthouse will be closed on Friday, Dec. 31 and Saturday, Jan. 1.
  • Prince William County libraries: Closed on Friday, Dec. 31 and Saturday, Jan. 1.
  • Prince William County landfill: Closed on Saturday, Jan. 1.
  • OmniRide: There will be no OmniRide service on Saturday, Jan. 1.
  • Prince William County Animal Shelter: Will close at 4 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 31. Closed on Saturday, Jan. 1.
  • Department of Motor Vehicles: All DMV customer service centers will be closed Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.
  • Metro: On Dec. 31, Metrobus operates on a Saturday schedule, while Metrorail operates on a weekday schedule. Both services operate on a Sunday schedule on Jan. 1. Visit www.wmata.com/schedules/timetables for more information.
  • Post offices: Some locations may have limited hours on Dec. 31. Check with your local post office. All post offices are closed on Jan. 1.
