Woman Shoots Herself At Woodbridge Sporting Event, Faces Charges

DALE CITY, VA — A Springfield woman is facing charges after she shot herself with her own gun while attending a sporting event at a local high school. Violet C. Ross, 37, is charged with reckless handling of a firearm after her gun fired while she was attempting to remove it and its holster from her belt, according to reports.

Ross was attending a sporting event at C.D. Hylton High School, Potomac Local reports. As she walked toward the ball field, she realized she was wearing her firearm on her belt, according to police. Ross went back to her vehicle, and attempted to remove the gun and its holster from her belt. While doing so, she fired the weapon and struck herself in the lower body.

Ross, who has a concealed weapons permit, police said, was taken to the hospital and treated for her injuries. Her next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 30.
