WOODBRIDGE, VA — When times are tough, heroes emerge. We all know someone who's making a difference right now as we live through unprecedented and changing times.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize these heroes making a difference in their communities. We’re working to let all your neighbors know about these outstanding people and their stories.

This submission comes from Loree Williams who nominated Lucy Williams of Woodbridge. Loree is Lucy's daughter and has seen her mother conquer cancer and give back to the community.

What does the local hero do?

President, Woodbridge Women's Club

Why do you believe the local hero should be recognized or honored?

Mrs. Williams is the first in the history of her local organization to write and recieve a grant for the organization to use to give back to the community. Since becoming the chapter President, she has championed a new scholarship for high school students, renewed partnerships with local schools to support students in need and grown membership. She continues to advocate for new programming for the club's members to engage in social activities and to contribute to others in need in the community. She is a living example of community service and what it means to never stop learning and growing!

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the local hero?

Lucy is a lifelong community servant and advocate for those in need. She is a breast cancer survivor and has been my inspiration to never stop learning and challenging myself to be better. She has always been my champion and has been my rock without her support and encouragement, I would not be the public servant I am today.

Thank you for all you do, Lucy Williams!
