Deputy Shoots, Kills Man Near Elk Plain

The man allegedly had a knife and was trying to enter people's vehicles.

ELK PLAIN, WA - A deputy shot and killed a man Friday night who was brandishing a knife and attempting to enter people's cars. Police initially received a call at 9:32 p.m. from a woman who said her friend was having a break down in the middle of the road and had a knife.

While on the call with a dispatcher, she told the man "Let go of me now!" and "Stop it!" She reported that the man was headed eastbound on 252nd Street near Elk Plain.

Police received additional calls saying that a man fitting the description of the friend was attempting to enter vehicles.

When deputies arrived at the scene, "the suspect had reportedly refused multiple commands from the deputy at gunpoint, then entered the deputy’s patrol vehicle at which point the deputy fired at the suspect," according to a statement from the Pierce County Sheriff's Department.

The deceased is believed to be a 28-year-old man from Spanaway. The deputy was not injured. The incident is under investigation.
