Dozens Potentially Exposed To Tuberculosis At MultiCare Auburn
MultiCare Auburn Medical Center is notifying dozens of patients and staff after a birth center employee tested positive for tuberculosis.

AUBURN, WA — Hospital officials believe more than 50 patients were potentially exposed to tuberculosis at MultiCare Auburn Medical Center between April and September 2019, after an employee tested positive for the disease. According to a news release, 53 patients — 27 adults and 26 infants — treated at the Family Birth Center have been notified, along with 107 staff members who worked shifts while the employee was on-duty.
Tuberculous does not spread easily, and the likelihood of transmission is low, but all patients who received notification letters are encouraged to get tested free of charge. Visitors who spent more than eight hours in the birth center over the five-month span may also get tested, according to MultiCare.
"For MultiCare, there is no higher priority (than) the safety of our patients and employees," said Dr. Arun Matthews, the hospital's Chief Medical Officer. "This situation is troubling to us but we are committed to ensuring TB testing and care for those who need it."

Tuberculosis is caused by airborne bacteria, and not transmitted by touching objects an infected person has handled. Hospital officials said a skin or blood test can determine if the infection is present, and it can often be treatable through medication. In 2018, 93 cases of tuberculosis were reported in King County.
More information on the potential exposures can be found on MultiCare's website.
