Driver Who Hit Autistic Boy, 11, Turns Himself In

Isaiah Bermeno suffered brain damage in the hit-and-run collision on Sunday, according to state police.

SHELTON, WA - A man who police believe hit and critically injured an 11-year-old autistic boy on Sunday near Olympia has turned himself in. Irven Jacobs fled the scene of the collision and ditched his car in a wooded area, according to police.

The crash happened around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday along Highway 101 near the Oyster Bay Road. Isaiah Bermeo was reportedly walking in the road when Jacobs hit him, police say. The boy had wandered away from home just a few minutes before he was hit.

Bermeo suffered brain damage, and is at Harborview in Seattle undergoing treatment. His family, however, does not think he'll live, according to KOMO News. The boy's mother, Breanna Rea Bermeo, has asked the driver to turn himself in.

State troopers located Jacobs' minivan abandoned on a gravel road near Shelton on Monday.

Jacobs turned himself in around 3 p.m. on Wednesday. He called police from Yelm, and was taken to the Thurston County Jail on a felony hit-and-run charge.
