Drunk Driver Returns To Crash Scene To Retrieve Bumper

A Pierce County deputy followed a trail of radiator fluid to the drunk driver's doorstep.

FREDERICKSON, WA - A drunk driver tried to get his bumper and license plate back from the scene of a hit-and-crash over the weekend. Unfortunately, a Pierce County deputy was at the scene with the victims.

The crash happened around 6:30 a.m. Saturday along 28th Avenue East in Frederickson. The victims were asleep at home when they heard a loud crash outside. They looked outside to find their car smashed - and someone else's bumper stuck to it.

A Pierce County deputy came to the scene to take a report and was able to follow a trail of coolant to the suspect's home. There, parked in the driveway, was a black SUV with a missing front bumper.

The deputy spoke to the driver, who said that he had fallen asleep while driving. Since he only lived a few blocks away, he told the deputy, he was going to go back and talk to the owners of the car he hit. The deputy gave the man a citation (noting that he smelled like alcohol) and then went back to the scene of the crash to talk to the victims.

Minutes later, the drunk driver showed up at the scene to get his bumper back. The deputy arrested the 28-year-old into for hit-and-run and DUI. He refused to take a breathalyzer at the scene.
