FDA Recalls Popsicles Over Listeria Fear

The ice pops were sold in Washington and several other states.

SEATTLE, WA - The Food & Drug Administration is recalling 3,000 cases of popsicles sold by Ziegenfelder Company of Wheeling, WV due to fear of spreading listeria. The ice pops that may be contaminated are the Budget $aver Cherry Pineapple Monster Pops and Sugar Free Twin Pops. The FDA said in a statement that the pops were subject to a voluntary recall as a precaution.

The agency provides the following warning regarding the dangers of listeria: "Listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, but Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women."

The pops were sold in Washington and 14 other states. The contamination was rooted in a problem at the company's Denver production facility and revealed during a routine state inspection. The company has ceased operations at the facility as they investigate the cause of the contamination.
