Washington National Parks, Forests Free Veterans Day Weekend

Federal national parks, wildlife refuges, and forests are free this weekend - the last free weekend of 2017.

CARBONADO, WA - The Department of the Interior will waive fees at all national parks, forests, and wildlife refuges this weekend in honor of Veterans Day. That means you can visit places like Mt. Rainier National Park and Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest free.

The department holds several "free" days throughout the year, and Veterans Day weekend is the last one of 2017. The next one likely won't be until Martin Luther King, Jr. Day 2018.

But if you're headed out into the wilderness this weekend, keep an eye on the weather. Snow has been falling across the Cascades this week, and some roads are closed.

At Mt. Rainier, the Carbonado and main Longmire entrances are open, but SR 410 over Cayuse Pass is closed for the season. Also, WSDOT is closing U.S. 20 through the North Cascades for the season at 4 p.m. on Friday.

If you're headed out toward Snoqualmie Pass, Saturday will be cloudy and dry, but rain will move in on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.
