King County Woman Dies After Garbage Truck Collision

The 19-year-old was hit by the truck in Port Orchard, according to Washington State Patrol.

PORT ORCHARD, WA — A 19-year-old woman from Des Moines died on Sunday, three days after she was hit by a garbage truck in Kitsap County, according to Washington State Patrol.

The incident happened at around 9:30 a.m. on June 27 when Mia R. Smith stepped out into SR 166 — known as Bay Street in the downtown Port Orchard area. The garbage truck was headed eastbound when Smith stepped into the street and was hit.

The 41-year-old truck driver, David R. Wells of Silverdale, was not injured, according to WSP. The incdient closed SR 166 for more than two hours. State police are still investigating the exact cause of the collision.
