SEATTLE, WA — Rates of suicide have increased across the U.S., including in Washington, since 1999. King County's suicide rate is about 11.7 per 100,000 people, and hundreds of people die each year here of suicide.

Certain risk factors like mental illness, the loss of a job or relationship, or abuse can increase the likelihood that a person will attempt suicide. But according to the Centers for Disease Control, 54 percent of suicides are carried out by people with no known mental illness.
There are specific warning signs to look out for, including:

- Talk of suicide or showing an interest in how to carry out suicide
- Appearing hopeless or talking about feelings of constant pain
- Talking about being a burden on others
- An increase in reckless behavior or excessive use of alcohol and drugs
- Sleeping all the time or very little
- Self-harm, like cutting or burning
Remember: suicide is complex, and one single event may not cause it.
What should you do if you notice these behaviors?
According to experts, start by asking if a person is thinking about suicide. Then take these steps:
- Take the person seriously
- Express concern, but listen closely and do not judge
- Reflect on what the person has told you, show them that they have been heard
- Make sure they know they are not alone
- Talk about treatments available
- Guide them toward professional help
