Spoofed WSP Number Linked To Bomb Threat, Scam
Scam phone calls, appearing to be from Washington State Patrol, warn of nearby bombs and instructs recipients to visit a specific website.

OLYMPIA, WA — Washington State Patrol is warning of a new phone scam that falsely claims bombs have been placed nearby, then directs people to a suspicious website under the guise of ensuring their safety. WSP said the number shows up on Caller ID as coming from a number associated with Washington State Patrol, by using illegal "spoofing" software. Several law enforcement agencies have been contacted by citizens who received the 16-second message.
According to WSP, there is no indication that these calls are legitimate or represent credible threats. Investigators do not yet know who is behind the scam. A copy of a voicemail provided to media features a computerized voice saying three bombs were placed nearby and directing to a website to "stay alive."
WSP said residents should be vigilent and avoid visiting any suspicious websites or providing personal information to unknown parties. Anyone who receives a threatening call should contact 911.
