Two Washington Salmonella Cases Linked To Pet Turtles
Salmonella cases in Kitsap and Whatcom counties have been linked to contact with pet turtles.
OLYMPIA, WA —A cluster of salmonella infections in Washington have been linked to contact with pet turtles, according to state health officials. The Department of Health said two cases, in Kitsap and Whatcom counties, are the latest in a growing, multi-state outbreak affecting 21 people in 13 states. One of the Washington cases led to hospitalization, with seven others hospitalized nationwide.
Health officials say this is not the first time the state has seen Salmonella cases linked to reptiles or amphibians. Even pets that otherwise seem clean can carry Salmonella bacteria on their bodies and spread those germs to their tanks.
According to the Department of Health, the best way to prevent illness is to always wash hands after handling pets and keep equipment away from anywhere food is prepared or eaten. Children are typically at a higher risk since they are less likely to wash their hands. Doctors say parents should contact them immediately if a child has a high fever, severe diarrhea or other concerning symptoms.
