WSDOT Trying To Make SR 520 Trail Smoother For Bikes

Have you been jolted by the SR 520 trail's expansion joints? WSDOT wants to hear from you.

BELLEVUE, WA - The SR 520 across the new floating bridge between Seattle and Medina has received rave reviews from bikers and walkers alike. But bicyclists have reported one bump - actually, about 30 bumps.

The steel expansion joints that bikers ride over feature a deep rut that provides a nasty jolt. So WSDOT is experimenting with expansion joint replacements that will hopefully make the ride a little smoother.

WSDOT has installed a prototype replacement expansion joint plate at the east end of the trail. As you can see in the photo above, the prototype (left) features a much shallower break. WSDOT will replace the remaining 27 expansion joints - if bikers vote for it.
