Amazon To Open New Sumner Fulfillment Center

The new warehouse will create "hundreds" of jobs in Sumner, in addition to existing regional fulfillment centers.

SUMNER, WA - Amazon will open a second fulfillment warehouse in Sumner in 2017, according to multiple reports. Amazon spokesperson Ashley Robinson told the Seattle Times that the warehouse will "create hundreds of full-time jobs." The second fulfillment center will complement other Amazon warehouses in the Sumner area, including Kent's new AmazonFresh warehouse.

In late May, Amazon announced that it needs to hire more than 1,000 full- and part-time positions at the Kent fulfillment center and at the AmazonFresh warehouse, which is moving to Kent from Bellevue. The jobs pay $14 per hour and up.

β€œThis is great news for Sumner but really for the entire region: these jobs add to the estimated 14,000 already in our Manufacturing Industrial Center, the largest manufacturing employment area in Pierce County," Mayor Dave Enslow told Patch.com. "That means jobs like this affect our entire region, supporting families and reducing the need for Pierce County residents to commute to King County."

Full-time workers at Amazon fulfillment centers can get benefits like health insurance and retirement savings. Amazon also offers full-time workers a benefit called "Career Choice," which pays up to 95 percent of the cost of tuition for an in-demand field, like nursing or IT careers.

Amazon opened its first 500,000 square foot fulfillment warehouse in Sumner in 2011, creating several hundred jobs.
