Monday Morning Quarterback

Recap of the Seahawks/Redskins game.

Seahawks were at home taking on the Washington Redskins.  With a win today they could have had their first three game winning streak since 2007.  Instead they let the Redskins score 16 unanswered points in the fourth quarter.  Final score Seahawks 17 Redskins 23.

The first half the Seahawks just looked flat and playing uninspired football.  They were lucky not to be losing at halftime, thanks to an interception and a blocked field goal by the defense.  Big man Red Bryant with a blocked field goal and would later have a blocked extra point in the game.  Halftime score Seahawks 7 Redskins 7.

Tarvaris Jackson was playing hurt and never got the passing game going today.  What does it say about back-up QB Charlie Whitehurst, that Pete Carroll would rather use an injuried Tarvaris Jackson then a healthy Charlie Whitehurst.  Tarvaris Jackson's passer rating on the day was 69.3 with only 126 passing yards two touchdowns and one interception.

The Seahawks running game ended the day with 124 yards.  Marshawn Lynch had another 100+ game with 111 yards rushing and a touchdown.  The best run of the day was Leon Washington's kick return for 49 yards.

Seahawks defense had more fight in them before the game then during the game.  Tempers were flaring before the game with both teams exchanging words.  That was the biggest spark I saw out of the Seahawks all game.

I thought the defense would have applied more pressure on Rex Grossman.  They were only able to sack him once with him stepping up in the pocket to avoid being sacked.  Rex Grossman had a passer rating of 96.6 with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

The biggest play against the Seahawks defense came in the fourth quarter when they had the Redskins backed in a corner with a 3rd and 19 on the fifty.  Rex Grossman was close to being sacked when he stepped up into the pocket and threw a 50 yard bomb for a touchdown to Anthony Armstrong for his only catch of the game.  This gave the Redskins a 20-17 lead and they never looked back.

I am starting to lose patients with the game management, the excessive penalties, clock management and play calling.  When the Seahawks went for it on fourth and five with a no huddle call. The Redskins had eight men on the line ready to attack Tarvaris Jackson.  Everyone watching knew they were coming and yet he held on to the ball to long and ended up being sacked for a loss of nine yards and giving the Redskins the ball back on the Seahawks 14 yard line.

I did not like the play call, knowing the Redskins were bringing pressure I thought they should have handed off to Marshawn Lynch.  By going no huddle that left the Redskins on their heels and no time to substitute players unless they used a timeout.

The Seahawks have a quick turn around playing this Thursday at home against the Eagles.  Which gives them no time to dwell on this game, just prepare for what is ahead of them.  If Tarvaris Jackson continues to play in pain or his injury gets worse they will have to think about using Charlie Whitehurst.

By the numbers:

Sidney Rice left the game with his second concussion in three games.

The Seahawks 88 yard touchdown drive was their longest offensive drive this season.

Seahawks had only 250 total yards on the day.

Redskins had three more offensive plays then the Seahawks but had 166 more total yards then the Seahawks.

Redskins stopped their six game losing streak.

Fun fact:

Red Bryant became the first Seahawks player in team history to have two games in the same season with two blocked kicks.
