Bonney Lake Parks: So Where Do We Go Now?

Asking where do we go now with park and recreation projects in Bonney Lake. How will we know what the taxpayers will support?

So where do we go now? The MPD issue is dead, though it could arise again. What then do we now do about parks?

A major issue is “What do you want?” This was the problem with the MPD issue. Had the MPD passed, each of us would have an opinion about what “should be” built first. To pass, the MPD had to convince each voter that, the project they wanted, would be built. That was impossible.

No matter what project is now proposed, people will oppose it in favor of what they think should be built.

In truth, nobody knows what the voters want. The survey that was done some time ago didn’t reach a majority of the voters. Unless a majority of the taxpayers make an informed decision, things won't get built.

What projects are out there that would have the support of the majority. That is taxpayers are willing to pay for?

Generally, a list of projects might look like this:

       Fennel Creek Trail.

       YMCA or Community Center.

       Playing Fields or Sports Complex.

Even the way we made the list can be criticized. Why shouldn’t the playing fields be first? Where is the Frisbee Golf Course?

Then there are the details. Fennel Creek Trail is designed to be several miles long. Where the first part should be built? Certainly that is a discussion point.

With the YMCA or Community Center, what facilities should be included? Who would own and or operate it?

Playing Fields or Sports Complex can be interpreted many ways. What sports would be provided for? Where would this be located?

With each project, voter support will go up or down based on what the project will look like. Those that don’t get ‘their” project built first very possibly will oppose the project that is selected.

We really, really wish the last vote had an advisory section. “Here are three possible projects. Which one do you want?” Count the replies and there would likely be a clear choice.

Is it possible to find a way of doing this?
