Do-It-Yourself Rag Rug
This rug uses the old T-shirts, scrap fabrics and stained sheets that are too worn to donate to Goodwill.
Well, we had a short burst of sun and heat, but there is no use denying it: The days are getting shorter, and steadily colder.
Soon we will wake up to a black sky and chill air. Why not make the prospect of getting out of bed a little less daunting by crocheting a rag rug to protect your feet from the icy floor?

Instructions:
1. Cut or tear the clothes and other material into strips between 1-3 inches thick. The wider the strips, the thicker your rug will be.

2. Begin by making a small loop.
3. Cross the long end of the fabric strip across the small loop and pull it through the other side, creating a second loop linked to the first.
4. Repeat, creating a short chain of four or five loops.
5. Slip the first loop onto your index finger.
6. Wrap the long end of the material around your finger, in front of the first loop, to make a second loop.
7. Pick up the last loop in the chain, so that you have three loops on your index finger.
8. Pull this last loop through the center of the other two loops on your finger, slipping those off of your finger at the same time.
9. Now you have one loop on your finger. Repeat steps 6 through 8, working in a circle.
10. The center of the rug should grow larger and larger, extending outward in a braid-like pattern. When you run out of material, stitch the end of another strip onto the end of the first, and continue working.
11. Stop when you feel that your rug is the right size, and display itΒ proudly. You can always add more later.
