Habitat For Humanity To Break Ground On Home For Military Vet

The Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines has sponsored the Habitat Build for Military Veterans.

BONNEY LAKE-SUMNER, WA - From Habitat for Humanity: On Thursday, August 23, Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines (FHLB Des Moines) will raise a wall for a new home in Pacific, Washington in partnership with Habitat for Humanity Seattle-King County. The project is part of Megan’s Meadow, a small community of single-family homes specifically for veterans, active-duty members, and Special Immigrant Visas (SIVs) who served in the U.S. Armed Forces. The project first broke ground in 2016, and by early 2019 will be home to nine low-income military families.

Rachel Grinage and her son were among the first families chosen to live in the Megan’s Meadow community. Grinage, who served in the Navy aboard the U.S.S. Dennis in Washington, said being a homeowner means the world to her. β€œIt will be my dream come true. It means happiness, stability and safety. It means everything.”

King County is home to more than 127,000 current and former members of the U.S. military, and 17,000 live below 200% of the federal poverty level. The city of Pacific currently has only one three-bedroom home for sale under $350,000. Many local veterans cannot pay the local home prices, or compete with homebuyers who are not subject to loan restrictions. The Megan’s Meadow project adds much-needed affordable housing to southern King County where most veterans currently live.
