Icy Roads Cause Major Accident in Orting

The roads were dry but as the fog rolled in, the roads became icy this morning near Orting causing trouble with morning commutes, school bus routes, and garbage pick-up.

Early morning fog turned dry roads in to an icy danger zone this morning near Orting. It started with a three car accident on Orville Road near the intersection with Highway 162 at approximately 7 a.m.

This stretch of road is a high traffic area in the morning, with commuters headed to work and school buses, logging trucks and dump trucks backed up even on a normal day.

Those three cars were followed by two loaded tandem dump trucks, which also crashed in an effort to avoid the three car pile-up. One of those trucks ended up in the ditch. The road was closed for both icy conditions and to allow time to clear away the accidents. No significant injuries were reported.

At the time this article was published, the road remained closed as tow trucks pulled the dump truck and both trailers from the ditch. Pierce County Sheriff Deputies on the scene expected the road to open within the hour.

The road closure affected the bus routes in Orting School District as well. Parents living in the Buttes housing development and other families living off of Orville Road were forced to choose between allowing their kids to stay home or drive an extra 12 miles through Graham. No notices were sent through the ememgency system and no phone calls were made by the school district to inform parents of any changes.

Garbage pick-up will also be delayed in the area. When Patch called Murrey's Disposal, they stated that residents should keep their trash on the curb. Service will be delayed but they assured me that if they are unable to pick up today, they will be back out tomorrow.
