There are many restaurants in town that serve burgers, but if you need one fast and you are on Main Street in Sumner, then two choices come to mind: Dairy Freeze and McDonald’s. Both have been in business for many years to serve an American favorite—the hamburger.  The goal in this local eats taste-off was to sample a 100 percent juicy beef patty and of course get an immediate burger fix.

One of Dairy Freeze’s most popular items is their quarter pounder, a fresh beef patty with special sauce, onion, tomato and dill pickle served on a soft and semi-sweet bun.  Just to make sure, I watched it being grilled and it definitely was fresh.  Burgers come out steaming hot and diners can be found longingly looking at each order being delivered to a table on the hope that it is theirs.

Menu options are the regular fast food fare and one of the major features is their hard-packed ice cream. It is an inexpensive option for lunch or dinner. A great feature of Dairy Freeze is the walk-up order window so the feast can be enjoyed right there, in the car or taken on a walk to a local park to enjoy. The cost of this burger:  $4.69.

At McDonald’s, the new and popular item is the Angus Deluxe.  This burger is 100 percent Angus beef with fresh onions, tomatoes, dill pickles, lettuce and served on a soft sesame bun with mayonnaise. The cost of this burger:  $4.29

Although hard-packed old fashion style ice cream is not an option, creamy soft serve is a fantastic alternative. Eat in and drive-thru are the fast conveniences.

For some added fun, order at both places and have a family taste-off to see which burger wins!
