Washington Primary Voter Turnout Hits 54 Percent

Tuesday's election drew more voters than the presidential primary in March, and far exceeds participation in the 2016 primary.

OLYMPIA, WA β€” Voter turnout in this week's primary election exceeded expectations, already outperforming both the presidential primary held earlier in the year and the August primary in 2016.

According to the latest available data, the state received ballots back from at least 54 percent of the state's 4.6 million registered voters, compared with 49.56 percent participation in March and 34.88 percent in Aug. 2016.

So far, the lowest turnout is in Yakima County, which still trends higher than usual at 44.1 percent. Ferry County, home to the advancing Republican candidate for governor, leads the state with 69 percent voter turnout.
